Paterson is located on the Passaic River and has the second highest population density of any city in the United States. The city is named after William Paterson, who is one of the signers of The Constitution and was the 2nd Governor of New Jersey.
Paterson is known as the “Silk City” for being a leading producer of silk, which is just one of many of its industries throughout the city’s history. Others have included textiles, firearms and railroad locomotive manufacturing. It is said to be the “Cradle of the Industrial Revolution” largely for the city’s ability to produce energy from the Great Falls of the Passaic River. The Great Falls have not only provided natural energy but it is also a National Historic Park and major tourist attraction of the area. A 10,000-seat ballpark, the historic Hinchliffe Stadium, sits on an escarpment above the falls and has hosted many professional ball games, boxing matches, and car races. Additionally, the famous comedy team of Abbott and Costello have taken the stage there for many shows, as Lou Costello was born and raised in Paterson NJ.
