Hackensack is located on the Hackensack River and is one of the first cities you will find yourself in when traveling westbound over the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan to New Jersey, making it a part of the New York Metro area. The city was first named New Barbados by the Royal English Naval Officer, Sir John Berry, who was a landowner and resident that once lived in the Caribbean Island of Barbados. Hackensack, then known as New Barbados, served as a strategic spot during the Revolutionary War, as it was headquartered by George Washington for a retreat from the nearby Fort Lee battlegrounds. In 1921 the city’s name was changed to it’s current day title derived from a similar sounding name the native Lenape People called the area..
