Danbury is located just 39 miles north of Manhattan making it part of the New York Metro Area. Historically, Danbury was significant during the Revolutionary War serving as a military supply depot. It was also where Sybil Luddington, the 16-year-old daughter of The American Colonel, Henry Luddington, made her infamous 40-mile ride on horseback throughout the area to warn the people of Danbury and her father’s forces of the invasion of British regulars on the night of April 26, 1777. Danbury also has a long history in the hat making industry, spanning over 250 years with some of the biggest names in headwear, such as Stetson. The city was once the largest hat producer in the country, giving it it’s nickname, “Hat City”, which today it is still called, even though no hats have been produced in Danbury since the early 1980s’.
Danbury is also known for its great shopping at the Danbury Fair Mall, one of the largest in New England, with a double-decker passenger carousel in the food court and many upscale department stores such as Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, L.L. Bean and JCPenny’s. The mall’s location was once home to the Danbury Fair, so popular and large it was considered to be a CT State fair and was held annually in October for 160 years until 1981. For those of you who like to fly or charter your own airplanes, Danbury has a small Municipal Airport for general public aviation use. It is a city that is home to large companies of industrial commerce like General Electric, Boehringer Ingelheim and Union Carbide to name a few. It is a college town, with a division of the State University of Connecticut, Western Connecticut State University, “West Conn”. Danbury has it’s own hospital which services most of north western CT and much of the bordering New York towns. The state’s largest lake, Candlewood lake, lies partially in Danbury and provides for many water and boating activities. It is clear that Danbury has much to offer, from top notch shopping to outdoor adventures, and was even once voted one of the best cities in the United States to live in!
