Bridgeport, rich in history and thriving new businesses, is Connecticut’s largest city and is a historic whaling and seaport city located on the Long Island Sound. In the late 1800s famous resident PT Barnum was once the Mayor of Bridgeport and is where he housed his circus during the winter time. In the early 1900s, the city was largely industrial and known for manufacturing a wide variety of things including iron goods, silver and brass products, Singer sewing machines, luxury automobiles, phonographs, typewriters and corsets, among other things. The city is also accredited with the very first Subway sandwich shop and the birthplace of the Frisbee. In spite of all, it’s successful commerce, Bridgeport has seen many years of hard times. In the mid-1950’s the reconstruction of heavy industry began, which led to the loss of thousands of jobs. Middle and upper-class residents left the area for suburban development housing, leaving the city with a high percentage of poor neighborhoods.
The city suffered from political mismanagement, for which several city officials were convicted, and is what led to an economic and social decline. The good news is that Bridgeport has made a turn-around over the last 20 years and is said to be “up and coming”. The city now has a number of museums, parks, zoos, and venues for live theater and music events. It is home to the annual 3-day arts and music festival, Gathering of the Vibes at Seaside Park, and even has it’s own prestigious orchestra which performs at Klein Memorial Auditorium. Reconstruction and rehabilitation of the many industrial buildings have occurred, creating new affordable housing, artist’s lofts, condominiums and a waterfront redevelopment project, including big plans awaiting approval for MGM to build a waterfront casino and shopping complex!
